Reunion Island is a French department in the Indian Ocean. The landscape is a little different to its low lying neighbour Mauritius, but don’t worry, it still ticks all the boxes when it comes to an idyllic tropical island getaway.
Reunion Island is home to Piton des Neiges, the highest peak in the Indian Ocean. It can be climbed in a long day hike, however there’s also the option to stay overnight halfway and reach the peak at sunrise – a view you won’t forget in a hurry. It’s worth taking a walk through the hills to visit the villages that now sit inside ancient volcanic craters.
In fact, Reunion Island’s main tourist attraction is Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world’s most active volcanoes which offers the possibility of unforgettable hikes and tours. For those who want the great views, but aren’t so keen on taking a great hike, you can always experience the views of Piton des Neiges is via a helicopter flight.
Reunion Island has just as many marvels below the sea as it does on its surface. Simply pop on a mask, dive in and discover breathtaking coral reefs. Reunion’s Natural Marine Reserve extends along 40km of the island’s coastline providing shelter to more than 3,500 marine species. There are also plenty of opportunities to swim with dolphins and even humpback whales in the winter months.
