Since 1965 the island is a Nature Reserve and has been managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.
It is the last refuge of the ebony forest that was, once, common around coastal Mauritius . It is the sanctuary of animal and plant species unique to Mauritius and not to be found anywhere else in the world.
Animals once known to have existed on the island have been reintroduced such as the pink pigeons, the giant Aldabra tortoises, the Round Island Telfair’s skinks. Mauritian kestrels and fruit bats will be re-introduced in a large aviary.
